Loose Basin Taps

Q: My basin taps are loose. How do I tighten them, there isn’t a lot of room under the basin, I can’t get a spanner in. Is there a special tool needed?

A.You need to buy top hat washers, these are small plastic connectors that fit under the basin and locate between the tap and the nut which secures the tap to the basin. There are split washers that you can fit without disconnecting the pipework.

Standard top hat washers cost about 30p each and split top hat washers cost about a £1. And yes you will need a basin wench which is designed for the job or if you are disconnecting the pipework a box spanner is the best tool and easiest tool to use.

What I always use when fitting basin taps is Centralising Washers, they keep the taps in the centre of the hole and prevent them from moving reducing the chances of the taps working lose.
