To give prospective customers an idea of the different types of plumbing jobs I do each week I give a brief run down of some of the plumbing jobs I have done. This week I changed a radiator in a bathroom in a house in Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton. The customer said that the bathroom did not get warm enough and he wanted the towel radiator taking out and a standard radiator fitted. When I looked at the towel radiator that he had install I could see that it was far to small to give the heat output required for the size of the room. I told the customer that I could put in a much larger towel radiator that would provide enough heat to keep the bathroom at a comfortable temperature but he preferred to go with a standard radiator. Cost wise a standard radiator for the size of the bathroom was approximately 20% of the cost of a towel radiator so he did save a considerable amount of money but its nice to have nice warm towels and a chrome radiator can make a bathroom look very stylish.

So if you are looking at having a towel radiator fitted the thing to remember is it needs to be of a size that gives the heat output required for the size of your bathroom. There are a number of websites that will work out the btu’s required for any room you just put in a few details about the size of your room the number of outside walls etc. and then gives you the btu’s you require so that when you go shopping for your towel radiator you know exactly the size you need to have a nice warm bathroom and warm towels. Or you could phone Owen your friendly Wolverhampton plumber and he will do everything for you.
Regarding this job it was straight forward enough the previous plumber or house owner had fitted isolation/service valves so I just need to turn those off, drain down the radiator, take the brackets off the wall and fill in the holes. Then I drilled the holes for the new brackets, fitted two new pieces of pipe to connect to the new valves and that was it. What made it easier was that the wall was not tiled where the radiator was fitted. Then it was a matter of filling up the radiator, bleeding the air out and adjusting the water pressure on the combination boiler.
