  • Put something under the water to prevent further damage.
  • Turn off the stopcock (tap) usually situated under the sink or somewhere else in the kitchen. Turn the handle clockwise for off.
  • Cannot locate the stopcock or it will not turn off?
  • Turn off external stopcock usually situated just outside your property boundary on the footpath. Terraced properties may have one stopcock serving several properties. Turn handle clockwise for about 3-4 turns.
  • Leak/burst on central heating or not sure? Turn off central heating system.
  • Water near electrical fittings? Turn off electrical supply.
  • Water above ceiling:  make a hole in the plasterboard to drain water away so the ceiling is not pull down with the weight of the water.
  • On hot water systems fed from a cylinder: close off the gate valve between the cold water cistern and the cylinder situated just above the hot water cylinder. It usually has a red handle on it.
